Torchere Glass Lamp Shade Replacement Types

!±8± Torchere Glass Lamp Shade Replacement Types

There is hardly any more confusion in the lighting industry than how to select a replacement glass shade for a torchiere lamp.

First let us define a torchiere lamp. A torchiere lamp is any table or floor lamp whose light is directed upward by means of a glass, metal, stone, plastic or other type of reflector. These lamps take many forms and are made of many materials but most commonly made as floor lamps.

The word "Torchiere" is derived from the French word "Torche" torch.

These popular lamps provide excellent area lighting because they bounce light off the ceiling and diffuse it throughout a large area of the room.

There are four (4) basic types of torchiere glass.

1) Dish type torchiere glass (most common) is a dish or bowl shape glass shade with a 1 5/8" wide center hole that simply slips down over the electrical socket and rests upon a metal or plastic holder. There is a threaded ring which screws down over the electrical socket to hold the glass in place. This type torchiere glass is usually frosted white, beige or plain white.

2) Reflector waffle pattern opal white torchiere glass is a cone shape glass shade available in two (2) common sizes: 2.75" fitter that is 10" wide and the other is a 2.25" fitter that is 8" wide. This torchiere glass usually has a waffle type pattern pressed into the surface of the glass although there are some with no pattern in the glass. These torchiere glass shades were very popular in the 1920's and 1930's and were found on many 6 way floor lamps that had 3 arm lights plus a center light. They are also available on some modern lamps as well as some floor lamps without arms. Many of these lamps are designed for a fabric lamp shade to rest upon the reflector glass. This arrangement not only provides excellent area lighting but also excellent reading light.

3) Long neck torchiere glass is a larger glass, usually around 13-16" wide with a long neck that fits down inside a 2.75 - 3"" wide holder. This glass shade has the appearance of a very wide funnel with neck. These are the most expensive type of torchiere glass shades.

4) Stiffel replacement torchiere glass is made specifically to fit lamps from this lamp maker.

If you need further help selecting the correct torchiere glass for your lamp, be sure to contact a professional full service lamp company with lots of experience with torchiere lamps.

Good luck on all your lighting projects.

Best Regards - Jim Hoyle

Save Money by Installing Cree LR6 LED Downlights

!±8± Save Money by Installing Cree LR6 LED Downlights

Most people don't spend a lot of time thinking about lighting and its associated energy costs in their homes or businesses, but that would change quickly if they knew the benefits and savings provided by energy efficient lighting found on the market today. Enter the LED downlight, one of the best LED lighting solutions available and a prime example of how LED lighting is going to revolutionize the lighting industry. While not all current LED replacement bulbs live up to their claims, products like the Cree LR6 Downlight provide you with beautiful warm white light, an 85% energy savings over conventional incandescent bulbs and a 50,000 hour life span. That means it won't need replacing for the next 20 years or more if ran for approximately 6-8 hours a day. The main question most people find themselves asking regarding LED downlights is, "Do the benefits justify the high cost?" The answer is a definite yes.

Let's look at the cost savings of using an LED downlight such as the Cree LR6 more closely. Most conventional downlights use a standard 65-watt incandescent bulb and are run on a switch that typically contains several downlights. For this example we'll say there are a total of six lights on a switch. On average, the cost to light just one 65-watt incandescent bulb for 50,000 hours is 5, so you find that six of them would cost ,950 to operate over that time. Another factor we have to consider is the rated life of an incandescent bulb, which is typically 750-1000 hours. Assuming each bulb lasts the full 1,000 hours, we'll need to buy 50 bulbs per fixture to get 50,000 hours of total run time. Multiply that by 6 fixtures and we'll be buying 300 bulbs! If the cost per bulb averages we'll end up paying an additional 0 for a grand total of ,550 to run six incandescent lights.

Now, what does the Cree LR6 cost to operate under similar circumstances? Amazingly, it runs on just 12 watts of power and uses 85% less energy than a 65-watt incandescent bulb. The energy cost to light one LR6 for 50,000 hours is only on average. If we have six downlights then our total energy cost equals a paltry 0, with the added bonus of never needing to replace them. Currently the LR6 sells for around , so we'll spend about 0 to install them (they can be installed as a direct replacement to standard downlights, no special tools needed) and our total cost will be 0 over the 50,000 hour period. That's a huge savings of ,650 over using 65-watt incandescent bulbs!

In case you're wondering how a LED downlight compares to a compact fluorescent bulb (CFL), the LED downlight is up to 50% more energy efficient than a CFL, and also doesn't contain mercury, a toxic material that requires special disposal and cleanup if a CFL bulb should break. One last benefit of LED downlights is they produce a much smaller amount of heat than traditional bulbs and will therefore help to reduce costs associated with air conditioning.

Why LED Lights Are Superior

!±8± Why LED Lights Are Superior

LED Lighting Products - Superior, Energy-Efficient Lighting.

Light Emitting Diode Products originated in the electronics industry and were used in the form of indication lights on products such as stereos, TV's, telephones and calculators. The technology used in these lights has come in leaps and bounds since they were first used commercially in around 1968, and now they are being used for general purpose illumination in household, garden, office, commercial and industrial environments. The popularity of LED lights continues to grow as a viable, everyday, energy-efficient lighting solution due to the products being far superior to other, conventional lighting systems in many ways. LED globes have an exceptionally long life.

If compared to a standard halogen downlight globe, which has a life expectancy of approximately 3000 hours, an LED downlight globe, which has a life expectancy of approximately 50000 hours, will outlast the conventional globes by around 15 times. This means less replacement costs and lower maintenance. These points alone are an unarguably significant improvement. Possibly the most important factor of the LED lighting products is its environmental impact. Not only does a longer globe life contribute to less waste and less maintenance which in turn saves on vehicle fuel and emissions, but LED lighting products actually use far less power to run. One 9 watt, LED downlight globe puts out the same amount of light as a 50 watt halogen downlight does. That means over 5 times LESS power is consumed when using LED lights, not to mention the dollars saved in running costs. LED's really are an energy-efficient lighting solution.

When we combine the energy efficiency of the LED light with the reduction in replacement lamps, we can see a significant decrease in carbon emissions into the environment. LED lighting products do not contain harmful gasses or UV rays and omits considerably less carbon dioxide than other standard globes which put carbon dioxide, sulfur oxide and nuclear waste into the landfills and atmosphere. It is not only environmental benefits that the LED boasts. LED lights can light almost anything, in any way. There are endless design possibilities, colours, shapes and sizes, plus, they turn on instantly. LED's are a safer alternative, containing no mercury and creating far less heat than other lighting methods.

Summary of Benefits

Long Life - over 50,000 hours Low Maintenance and Globe Replacement Eco Friendly Lighting Solution Creates Less Waste Energy-Efficient Lighting - uses less power to run and creates a higher output of light per watt Decrease in Carbon Emissions Versatile - many options such as colours, shapes, sizes Safer - non-toxic, generates far less heat than other lamps Higher Vibration and Shock Resistance

Home lighting will usually contribute to over 30% of a household's total electricity bill. See it be reduced by replacing your inefficient, out of date halogen and incandescent light globes with LED lighting products. They're a cost-effective, energy-efficient lighting alternative. Just one LED bulb can keep one half ton of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere through its life cycle. The environment is a subject that everyone is aware of. If you don't already use energy-efficient lighting, perhaps it's time to start.

Dress Up an Outdated Ceiling Fan with Tissue Paper: Using 11 Simple Steps

!±8± Dress Up an Outdated Ceiling Fan with Tissue Paper: Using 11 Simple Steps

Have you ever noticed that after you redecorated one of your rooms, you glanced up to find your outdated ceiling fixture standing out like a sore thumb? After deciding to revamp one of my bedrooms inspired by a Safari theme, I realized that my old, outdated ceiling fan lacked continuity with the new décor. With an already overextended budget, replacement light fixtures were relatively expensive. However, with a little bit of creativity, I discovered a cost effective solution to this accessory dilemma. Using some inexpensive and recycled items, you can easily revamp your existing ceiling fan, to make it a unique focal point.

Here are the materials needed:

o Tissue Paper (your choice)

o White craft glue (or decoupage paste)

o Water

o Disposable plastic cup

o Scissors

o Fan Blades (purchase new blades if you prefer)

o Scotch or Double Sided Tape

o Sponge Brush

o Cotton rags (for cleanup)

o Plastic knife or wooden stirrer

o Disposable gloves

o Polyurethane or Crystal Clear Gloss Spray

o Sheer stain or tinted glaze

o Ahl or Ice Pick

o Four to Five wire hangers

o Glass globes (if applicable)

o Glass paint or paint markers (optional)

The following eleven steps will help you coordinate your outdated ceiling fan with the rest of your room:

1. Begin with clean blades by removing and cleaning existing blades from your ceiling fan.

2. Cut the tissue paper twice the size of your blade. Don't worry about cutting your paper in the exact shape of the fan blade. A rectangular pattern will suffice.

3. Put on disposable gloves. Form the paste by mixing one part water to one part white craft glue in a disposable plastic cup. If you prefer, you can use decoupage paste instead of the glue mixture. Execute in a well ventilated area.

4. Apply paste solution using a sponge brush to coat both sides of the blades.

5. Gently lay your tissue paper over the coated area and brush another coat of paste over the paper to saturate and ensure that the two materials adhere. Don't worry about overlapping or completely smoothing the paper, because the little folds and creases add character and texture.

6. With an ahl or ice pick, pierce the paper through the top center hole on the fan blade. Gently guide the "hook" end of a wire hanger through the pierced hole and hang the blade from an elevated surface. Keep anything from brushing up against your blades that would interfere with the drying process.

7. (Optional) After blades are dried, if you want to obtain an antiqued appearance, apply a sheer coat of stain or tinted glaze over them.

8. Allow to dry completely, then brush on a thin coat of polyurethane or spray the blades lightly with a coat of crystal clear gloss. This seals the paper while adding a subtle sheen to the surface.

9. After your blades are completely dry, pierce the paper with your ahl or ice pick in the location of the other screw holes and reattach them to the fan's frame.

10. If the neck of your ceiling fan is short, you could tape a little bit of your tissue paper around this area. If the neck has a long stem, you could wrap some complimentary fabric around it and secure with Velcro. Ensure that nothing is obstructing the motor's ventilation and operational systems while in use.

11. (Optional) Embellish your control chain pulls with beads, crystals or lightweight finials. You can also add a decorative accent to your existing light globe or glass covers, by using paint designed for such surfaces.

Be creative when reviving your light fixture. Overall, this project will run between five to twenty dollars, depending on the materials you have on hand, as well as your extent of embellishments used. This makeover is lightweight and should not cause undue strain on the fan's operational system, depending on its current condition. Consider the drying time in regard to temperature, proper ventilation and the number of accents applied. This project should take a day to complete. Now, stand back and enjoy your refurbished, one of a kind, ceiling accessory.

LED Light Bulbs - The Newest Technology in Illuminating Spaces

!±8± LED Light Bulbs - The Newest Technology in Illuminating Spaces

LED lamps are nothing but a cluster of individual LED light bulbs. These bulbs operate on the principle of a pin junction where the energy flows in one direction from p to n side when a voltage is applied it. The p and n sides of the junction are made of different semiconductor material. Just by varying the semiconductor material, the color of the emitted light can be changed.

A few years back LED light bulbs had limited usage. They were used only in digital devices and traffic lights, but now they are being used widely in residential and commercial lighting. Some LEDs produce light of wavelengths between 400 nm and 700 nm while infrared LEDs produce light of the wavelength greater than 830 nm. With the introduction of diodes that produce white light, the applications of these bulbs have become widespread.

Many people are switching to LED lamps because of their manifold benefits. They are energy efficient, environment friendly, and have good life span. Also, they are sturdy and do not get easily damaged due to shocks. An LED lamp consumes one-tenth of energy consumed by an incandescent bulb and has an average life span of 10 years. The luminous efficiency of LED light lamps varies from 20 lumens per Watt to 55 lumens per Watt. Though the Compact Fluorescent bulbs also have good luminous efficiency, but many people do not prefer them as they contain harmful mercury. Mercury poses problems both to the environment as well as to the health of the occupants.

However, there are no such problems with LED lamps. They are entirely free from harmful materials. Moreover, they need to be replaced only once in a decade, hence the waste generated by them is very less. Therefore, they are environment friendly. LED light bulbs are of many different types. If you need a focussed light in one direction, then LED floodlights and LED downlights are useful. LED globes are useful if you need diffused light that illuminates the entire area uniformly. One can also buy LED tube lights, dimmers, and garden lights for their homes or offices.

How to Buy a Light Emitting Diode Bulb?

Since LED light bulbs are relatively expensive than Compact Fluorescent Bulbs and last for almost a decade, one should choose them carefully.

Determine Your Needs - This includes wattage of the bulb, type of illumination required, and place for which it is required. You can get anything from 3v to 18v LED bulbs. A 3v LED bulb is as good as 25W incandescent bulb, a 12v LED bulb serves the purpose of a 50W incandescent bulb, and a 18v LED bulb can be used at places where 100W incandescent bulb is required.

The illumination of these bulbs varies depending upon their manufacturer and construction. While some 12v LED light bulbs are equivalent of 40W incandescent bulb, some serve the purpose of 60W incandescent bulbs. Therefore, one should check the entire specifications of the bulb before buying the LED lamps.

Luminous efficiency is one thing that can change the performance of the bulb. Though most manufacturers offer bulbs of 20 lumens per Watt efficiency but buying the one having efficiency between 40 lumens per Watt to 55 lumens per Watt is better.

You should determine the color of light you want. It depends on your personal taste and the area that has to be illuminated. Color is often represented by temperature in Kelvin. A low temperature of 2100 K indicates warm colors like yellow while high temperature of 5100 K indicates cold colors like blue. Most people prefer warm colors for indoor and cold colors for outdoors.

Beam angle is another factor that should be considered while buying an LED light bulb. If you want to focus light on a small area then a LED bulb with narrow beam angle of 15 to 30 degrees is good. If you want to lighten up a wide area with subtle lighting, then choose an LED bulb with a wide beam angle of greater than 45 degrees as it spreads the light over a large area. Buying LED light bulbs is not difficult. Several online stores sell these lights. Before buying, spend some time researching on the types of LED lamps available. Also compare their rates. Most sellers offer warranty on these bulbs and you should check it before striking the final deal. You should buy the one having at least one-year warranty.

How to Decorate a Trailer Home

!±8± How to Decorate a Trailer Home

Decorating a trailer home presents several challenges due to limited space and long & narrow dimensions. However the fact is that decorating a trailer home is no different than decorating a normal living place. With little creativity and innovation you can turn your space into a well decorated and stylish home. Below simple tips will help you make your trailer home look the best.

Exterior:

The exterior will build the first impression. Paint outside of your trailer home, front porch and steps with nice colors. You can also use a small set of chairs and tables to add a welcoming look.

Do not forget to add lots of colorful plants on the deck area, near steps, on trailers etc. However you should be careful that you do not add too much flowers that overwhelm the place. Grow plants or use some colorful potted plants that do not grow too high.

Walls & Ceiling:

Choosing a color scheme for your trailer home is the most important concern. Using lighter colors makes interior look bigger. You can add some nice textures to the walls by using faux painting techniques. Paint dark panels as white. It is advised to give your ceiling white color as it will make your ceiling look at height.

Floors:

Consider renovating floors of your trailer home with light colors. You can use wood laminate in the floors of bedrooms and living room. You can also place some nice rugs matching your color scheme. Use large tile like laminate or wood tiles in the kitchen floor.

Windows & Curtains:

Use light curtains or stylish blinds that allow natural light enter your trailer home. You can make your window look longer by placing the curtain-rods above the actual window height.

Mirrors:

It is always a good idea to place mirrors opposite to window to make room look spacious.

Lighting System:

Use modern globes for holding light bulbs. It is better to use frosted bulbs that emit soft light. Make dark corners look cozy by placing table lamps.

Furniture:

Do not overwhelm your home with lots of heavy furniture as it will dominate the room. Use small and delicate furniture.

Storage System:

Using closet systems will give your trailer home a nice and tidy look. Place boxes under the bed as additional storage area. You can also get some old drawers, add wheels to it, cover with nice cloth and place it under your bed.

Rooms:

Use delicate and less furniture, stylish curtains, flower vases and modern rugs to make your room look great. Using round tables in living room and dining room will work best.

You can decorate living room by using narrow or sectional furniture and wall arts. You can also place a plush-love seat and a recliner. Hang one or two large art pieces on the wall.

Decorate your bedroom by adding nice hanging baskets from the ceiling. Using nice quilted bed sheet matching room's color theme will add more charm to the room. Place a nice rug in your bedroom. Use contemporary lamps and beautiful flower vase. In the dining room, use round dining table with a removable leaf and small chairs.

Bathroom:

Keep your bathroom simple and tidy. Use simple and light shower curtains. Do not use too much accessories and use decorative baskets and boxes for placing small toiletries. Place wash clothes and hand towels on the shelves.

Kitchen:

Use wooden flooring and light colors in the kitchen. Do not use too much accessories on the counter and use that space as storage area. Make sections inside cabinets by using static and hanging panels. Use small and simple lighting fixtures.

Choosing the Correct Glass Lamp Shade

!±8± Choosing the Correct Glass Lamp Shade

There are many styles and sizes of glass shades, many of which are standard. It can be initially confusing trying to figure out the right size and style for your particular fixture or lamp, but here are some guidelines that will assist you in making the right choice.

First tip: Always take measurements from outside edge to outside edge as this is how glass sizes are classified.

Second tip: Remember that glass is undersize. What does this mean? If the glass is classified as a 2 1/4", or a 7", the actual measurement of the glass will be slightly less than its stated size.

The first step is to determine how your glass is held in place.

1. Does the glass sit on a table lamp or chandelier that has a round ring or tripod? You probably want a Student shade. Measure the ring, outside edge to outside edge. Standard sizes are 5", 6", 7", 8", 10", 12" and 14". There is often a place for a chimney to sit within the larger ring. Again, measure that holder, outside edge to outside edge.

2. Is the glass held in place by three screws and does it have a slightly flared neck? If so, measure the cup or holder, outside edge to outside edge.

* If the holder measures just over 2 1/4", you are looking for 2 1/4" fitter shades.

* If the holder measures just over 3 1/4" or 4", you are looking for 3 1/4" or 4" fitter shades. Both sizes come in two styles: either enclosed globes or open shades.

* Glass with 6", 8" and 10" fitters are also available in enclosed globe styles.

3. Do you have a table lamp that has a brass or glass bottom and the glass sits on a ring with no screws? You may be looking for a Gone With The Wind globe. The ring will measure just over 4" and the globe will have a straight neck that just sits on the ring. There is usually a smaller holder for a Chimney within the larger 4' ring.

4. Does your glass have a fairly flat opening with no distinct neck? Do you put it on the lamp or fixture around the light bulb socket and then screw a ring around the threaded part of the protruding socket? If so, you are looking for a Neckless shade. Most of these shades have a 1 5/8" opening.

5. Floor lamps can be very confusing. We have found the most common types to be as follows:

* If your lamp is newer, and you need a glass with a 1 5/8"-1 7/8" opening, you may need a Neckless shade. The shade is placed on the lamp around the bulb socket, and a ring generally threads around the part of the socket that protrudes.

* Shades on older floor lamps, called Torchieres, have a longish neck that measures 2 3/4" which fits around an oversize Mogul light bulb socket.

* There is also a very popular floor lamp, dating from the 1950"s, that looks like a torchiere but uses a different type of glass. If your floor lamp has a holder with screws, it will not take the older torchiere style. You need what is called an IES Diffuser glass shade. Often the IES shade supports a fabric shade. IES Diffusers come in three standard sizes: 2 1/4" fitter with a 6" top diameter, 2 1/4" fitter with an 8" top diameter, and 2 7/8" fitter with a 10" top diameter.

6. Chimneys usually sit within several prongs or inside of a round gallery. Again, measure outside edge to outside edge to determine the correct size.

7. Hurricane glass is commonly used on chandeliers and wall sconces. The holder or cup will measure about 1 3/4" outside edge to outside edge. The glass itself is called a 1 5/8" fitter, although the actual measurement is closer to 1 1/2".

Hopefully these tips will help you in determining the proper glass shade for your lamp or fixture. Good luck! Tania Maxwell
